As a research and advocacy institution, AFRIM sees itself in the center of providing alternative development education and information services to the prime movers that shape the direction of Mindanao’s development -- the development workers and progressives within the ranks of government and private entities.

The following services constitute the core competencies of the organization:

Information services and electronic networking. Training on computerized databanking and electronic networking systems, establishment of ICT infrastructure such as Local Area Network, website development, among others to support the development initiatives of NGOs, POs, the church, academe, government, business, and mainstream media.

Integrated Library Systems. The Alternate Resource Center of the organization has earned a solid reputation for its formidable collection of books, manuscripts, research materials and news clippings on various macro issues that affect Mindanao development such as poverty, agriculture, peace, environment, among others. AFRIM provides training on establishing integrated library systems.

Consultancies and trainings. The conduct of specific baseline and development studies, research design formulation, project impact assessment, and similar activities.

Development Education. Trainings on curriculum development, materials development, campaign management, gender sensitivity, grassroots organizing, sustainable agriculture, basic ecology, among others.

In the pursuit towards genuine development of Mindanao, the organization aims to take its development work to the next logical level by harnessing its core competencies and the gains it has achieved in the last 25 years. It is clear to the organization that it wants to continue to actively steer Mindanao’s development through its researches, advocacies, information services, and community development work but, it also aims to eventually contribute to the skills and value development of the peoples of Mindanao through a training center and/or institute which will eventually be expanded into a school - AFRIM School of Economics, Development and Management, Inc.
